Michigan State University has reached a settlement with survivors of the Feb. 13, 2023 campus shooting, two years after legal action was taken against the university, lawyers representing them announced Tuesday morning.
MSU has agreed to pay a total of $29.75 million to students Nathan Statly, Troy Forbush and Yukai "John" Hao, announced Gurel Mills and Grewal Law, the law firms representing the students. All three students suffered life-altering gunshot wounds, with Hao's injuries paralyzing him, during the Feb. 13, 2023 mass shooting on campus that left three students dead and injured five others.
Statly, who was an environmental biology and zoology junior at the time of the shooting, received a settlement of $14.25 million. He was shot in the head, with injuries resulting in the need for extensive medical treatment and ongoing care, his attorney said.
Hao, who was an economics junior at the time of the shooting, received a settlement of $13 million. Hao was left paralyzed from the chest down after being struck by a bullet in his back, his attorney said.
Forbush, who was a music education and vocal performance junior at the time of the shooting, received a settlement of $2.5 million. He was shot in the chest, resulting in surgery and follow-up therapy.
"These settlements bring closure to one chapter of these survivors' healing journeys," a press release from the legal firm said.
In response to the settlement, MSU communications released a statement.
“Michigan State University understands the depth of the impact of the events of February 13 and extends our deepest condolences to those injured and to their families and loved ones,” university spokesperson Mark Bullion wrote in an email to The State News. “Our university community stands with them and continues to work with them as they heal and recover from the tragedy. While the university cannot comment on any specific settlements, we truly hope reaching a resolution helps provide some measure of relief, support and care to impacted individuals and their families.”
MSU plans for a memorial to be placed on campus in memory of students Arielle Anderson, Brian Fraser and Alexandria Verner.
